Enclosure in Kilcooney

Enclosure

What is recorded here

Kilcooney enclosure appeared on the first Ordnance Survey map as a rath, then vanished from later editions and ground view. It may have been a boundary marker, a burial mound or a forgotten field edge, but the surveyors saw enough shape to draw it before the land took it back.
Clearly marked on first ed. OS 6-inch map as a rath but not marked on subsequent eds. Not visible at ground level. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 May 2011

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
