Enclosure in Flemingtown

Excavated in 2002 (Licence no. 02E0297), the remains were found to consist of a curvilinear fosse (1m in width), representing roughly one third of a circle (10.5m diam.). A sherd of Bronze Age coarse pottery was recovered from the ditch. Two radiocarbon dates of 985-817 cal. BC and 217-344 cal. AD indicated a construction date for this enclosure in the late Bronze Age with subsequent activity in the late Iron Age. The enclosure was truncated by a linear field drain from which a sherd of Leinster cooking ware was recovered (Byrnes 2002, 7). Compiled by: Christine Baker Date of upload: 6 February 2015
