Enclosure in Cliven

Enclosure

What is recorded here

Cliven holds a ghost field called Liss, where a forgotten ringfort may have stood before memory blurred it into a cave. The name itself is a boundary marker, suggesting a enclosed life where people lived, hid or worshipped before the land swallowed the shape. What is certain is that the place still carries the idea of enclosure, even if the earth has taken back the wall.
According to local information gathered in 1967 by Peter Danaher (ASI) this field was called the 'Liss field'. This suggests there may have been a ringfort-type enclosure here although it may be confused with the enclosure to the S (LH017-061----) which is visible on an aerial photograph (CUCAP AJY 38). It was also claimed there was a 'cave' in the field (LH017-062002-). Compiled by: Claire Breen Date of upload: 21 June 2012
