What is recorded here

Enclosure in Castlerichard is a circular mark thirty metres wide, sitting so close to the Womanagh flood plain that it may be an abandoned river bend rather than a human home. If people ever lived there, they chose dampness and risked drowning instead of dry ground. More likely the river moved, carved a circle, left it behind and continued elsewhere.

Cropmark (CASAP) shows univallate circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m). Site is very close to flood plain of Womanagh river and appears very damp. Unusual siting for ringfort or other settlement. Possible that this mark and another to E in same field may result from abandoned meanders. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
