Enclosure in Castle Eve

Enclosure

What is recorded here

Castle Eve in County Kilkenny contains a hidden enclosure near Highrath, where an ancient fort was levelled long ago. The soil still marks the lost shape, waiting for rain or harvest to reveal what people stopped seeing.
Carrigan (1905, vol. 3, 330) refers to, 'High Rath, a sub-division of Castle Eve, is so called from an ancient fort long since levelled'. 'Highrath' is the name given to a settlement cluster on the 1st ed. OS 6-inch map and is also on the 1948 revision and the 25-inch OS map. The 'fort' is unlocated within the townland, however, an enclosure (KK027-086----), which was been identified as a cropmark within the townland c. 590m SW of Highrath, may be the levelled 'fort'.
