Enclosure in Brownstown (balrothery West By.)

Located within a large arable field known as the Stang, close to the townland boundary between Brownstown and Roscall with extensive views south to the Dublin/Wicklow mountains, cropmarks indicate the presence of subsurface remains of a trivallate enclosure. Aerial photographs supplied by Mrs Nessie Bergin show a circular middle enclosure (diam. c. 30m) with a distinct ditch (wth. c. 5m) with a possible entrance to the east. There is an outer enclosure (diam. c. 55m) defined by a ditch (wth. c. 2m) also with an entrance to the east. The circular inner enclosure is much less distinct. The wayleave of the Gas Pipeline appears to have partially truncated the north-west of the enclosure site. Other cropmarks to the east and west indicate a series of enclosures and possible field system.
