Enclosure in Boherhole

Enclosure

What is recorded here

On level pasture. The possible W limits of a potentially large circular area (est. diam. c. 200m), through which a road runs N-S, were identified by local historians (Geissel and Horgan 1986, 27-9) and part of a possible enclosing fosse in the SW sector was subsequently archaeologically (Excavation licence no. 98E0550) investigated by Breen (1999, 94-6) in advance of the road's re-alignment . The excavation results were inconclusive, but it was thought, '… plausible that the site represents a ditched enclosure, later altered by use as a gravel pit' (ibid. 95).
