What is recorded here
Baunteen holds two conjoined rings and a nearby cairn below the great Harps on the Galtee flanks. The second ring rises twenty metres wide, bounded by a scarp and shallow fosse, while pasture and scrub leave its interior dry and open. It is the kind of place where people may have gathered to mark season, loss, or ownership before fields cut through it.
In pasture, with good views in all directions. An enclosure (LI050-018001-) lies to the immediate W and a cairn (LI050-019----) lies 45m to the S. Depicted on the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map as a circular-shaped area enclosed by a bank. Shown on the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map as a raised oval-shaped area defined by a scarp, intersected at SW by a post-1700 field boundary running NW-SE. Westropp (1919, 21) described it as one of ‘The conjoined rings of Baunteen, with a cairn near them, lying below the great “Harps” formed by coombs and parallel watercourses on the flanks of the Galtees.’ Recorded by the ASI in 1999, as enclosure B of two enclosures (LI050-018001-), described as a raised circular platform (diam. 20m) defined by a scarp (Wth 2.6m; H 1.6m) with fosse (D 0.6m; Wth at top 5.7m; Wth at base 2.4m) from N-E, intersected at SW by a drain running NW-SE. Overgrown interior level and dry. Scrub-covered monument visible on Digital Globe orthoimage taken between 2011-2013 and on Google Earth orthoimages.
