Enclosure in Ballycrovane

Series of features in cutaway bog on S side of Lough Fadda. (a) Four small sub-rectangular enclosures (L 4 - 5.2m; Wth 2 - 4m), each defined by single line of loose or loosely set stones; many stones thrown within. Locally known as "the clocháns". (b) Underlying most westerly enclosure above is circle of low-set stones (7m N-S; 8.2m E-W), some set edge to edge. (c) c. 20m to SW of (b), line or thirteen stones running N-S for distance of 10m. Second line of stones c.200m to NE. (d) c. 30m to SE of (c), saw-pit (L 4m; Wth 1.2m; D 1.5m) known as 'Clais Donnacha Oig' where, it is said, bog-wood was cut in 1700s. Two other saw-pits in bog - Clais na Sál (where wooden soles for shoes were made) and Clais an adhmaid. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
