Enclosure in Ballycahill

On a NW-facing slope, under scrub and on the E side of Ballyvaughan valley. Hachured on the 1842 and 1916 eds of the OS 6-inch map. Westropp (1901, 282) referred to it as one of ‘seven cahers’ in this townland predominantly ‘small and levelled… [and] quite overthrown and crowded with sloe and thorn-bushes’. A roughly circular enclosure (est. diam. 20-25m); on the basis of Westropp’s description it was likely a cashel. Inspection in 1998 could not locate any surviving above-ground trace of this monument. The area was very disturbed and midden-like material, including land-snail shells and seashells, were visible in the disturbance.
