Enclosure

What is recorded here

In pastureland overlooking partly drained marshland to N. Poorly preserved subcircular enclosure (N-S 112m, E-W 109m) defined by an earthen bank and external fosse. The td. boundary, running N-S, cuts the monument in half, and the area to E of it has been partly levelled and is planted with trees. The bank (H 1.5m max.) and fosse (Wth 3-4m) are well defined from S through W to N, though partially overgrown and mantled with trees. There are traces of a possible entrance (Wth 4m) at SE and of an internal division in SW quadrant. A field boundary, running E-W, also cuts through SE quadrant. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
