Enclosure in An Choill Mhór (bar. Corca Dhuibhne)

(s) Enclosure: Only the outer face of this circular stone enclosure, 14.5m in external diameter, has been exposed by turf-cutting. The peat in the interior remains to a depth of .75m, but probing with bamboo rods indicates a wall thickness of 2.4m, though some of this may represent collapse. Probing also indicates that no wall exists in the ENE sector and it is presumably here that the entrance is located. The outer wall face stands to a maximum height of .8m and is constructed of large boulders in contrast to the smaller stones visible in the adjacent field walls. The precise relationship between the enclosure and the pre-peat ground surface is masked by a .2m depth of peat which remains uncut, and the relationship between it and the 3 radiating pre-bog field walls is obscured by collapse.
