Enclosure in An Choill Mhór (bar. Corca Dhuibhne)

(t) Enclosure: An oval stone enclosure measuring 10.8m NE-SW x 12.6m NW-SE internally. The interior is filled by a .8m depth of peat and the wall is for the most part represented by a low peat-covered bank with a few stones protruding here and there along the top and sides. However, both the drystone-built outer face and rubble core of the wall have been revealed at 2 or 3 points where the turf has been cut away right up to the enclosure, leaving only a .15m depth of peat covering the old ground surface. The wall survives to a maximum height of .95m and probing indicates a wall thickness of c. 2.75m. The 1.8m wide entrance gap at ESE appears to be slightly out-turned but this impression may be due to collapse or irregular peat cutting. The above description is derived from J.
