Embanked enclosure

Enclosure, large enclosure

What is recorded here

Embanked enclosure is an enclosure, large enclosure in Lissacurkia (roscommon By.), County Roscommon, Ireland. The subcircular grass-covered area sits towards the west edge of a broad plateau and measures 89 metres northeast-southwest by 80 metres northwest-southeast. An earthen bank with a hedge defines the perimeter, while an outer flat-bottomed fosse surrounds the structure.
Marked as a single embanked enclosure on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, but only in its complexity on the 1930 ed. It is situated towards the W edge of a broad plateau. It is a subcircular grass-covered area (dims 89m NE-SW; 80m NW-SE) defined by an earthen bank with a hedge (Wth 4-5.8m; int. H 0.2-0.8m; ext. H 1.5-2m). There is an outer flat-bottomed fosse (Wth of top 5-7.7m; Wth of base 1.5-2m; D 0.3-0.5m) which is re-cut as a drain with an outer bank (Wth 3m; ext. H 0.3m) SW-NW. The interior is cut by a NE-SW drain with banks on either side and there is a drain with two banks running SE from it to the perimeter. The perimeter is reduced to a fosse (Wth of top 9m; D 0.3m) N-NE, and a straight field bank provides the perimeter NE-E. An entrance through the inner (Wth1.4m) and outer (Wth 1.5m) banks and causeway (Wth 3.5m) at SW may be modern. Rath (RO028-081----) is c. 80m to the SE.
