What is recorded here
Embanked enclosure is a fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Coolteige, County Roscommon, Ireland. Three earthen banks and two rounded fosses form a circular grass-covered area on a gentle south-facing slope. The outer bank is interrupted in the southeast, where a possible entrance may have stood.
On a gentle S-facing slope. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 65.5m E-W; 60.2m N-S) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 2-4.2m; int. H 0.3-0.4m; ext. H 0.6-1.4m) with some bushes, separated by a rounded fosse (Wth of top 6.7-8m; Wth of base 3-3.6m; D 0.3-1.1m) from a central scrub-covered earthen bank (Wth of base 2-4.7m; ext. H 0.3-1.1m). This is separated by a rounded fosse (Wth of top 6.8-10.3m; Wth of base 3.2-5.7m; ext. D 1.2m) from an third scrub-covered bank (Wth 4.1-5.2m; ext. H 0.2m) that does not survive ENE-ESE or SSE-SSW (max. ext. diam. 96m E-W). There is no identifiable original entrance, but it may have been SSE-S where the three banks are removed or interrupted.
