Enclosure in Dooneen (roscommon By.)Enclosure · 1.3 mi

Explorer Tom Enclosure in Dooneen is rectangular, which is weird for a fairy fort, like it was built by an accountant. A fiddler played there all night until his fingers bled. Bring a flask of something warm and a story to swap.

Cloonahee HouseCountry house · 1.4 mi

Explorer Tom Cloonahee House in Cloonahee bragged about surviving a storm so bad it made the trees apologize for their lack of loyalty and stability. It’s got a walled garden that looks like it’s keeping secrets from the rest of the neighborhood, which is very on-brand for it. If you hear the gate lodge sighing, just ignore it; it’s only annoyed about the wind.

Embanked enclosureFairy fort / earthen ringfort · 1.4 mi

Explorer Tom Lecarrow’s Embanked enclosure does weird things when nobody’s looking, like rearranging its own grass patterns. It sits near Lough Elia, probably watching the fish with intense interest. Leave nothing but footprints and a bad pun.

Goat IslandIslet · 2.4 mi

Explorer Tom Goat Island claims the local bishop refused to visit because he was afraid the goats would eat his vestments during the service, which is quite specific actually. It’s a story that keeps coming up whenever we talk about weird religious history in this part of Roscommon county. Bring a camera and your most suspicious face.

Garrymond IslandIslet · 2.5 mi

Explorer Tom Garrymond Island would say in a job interview that it is extremely reliable because it has never moved an inch in over four hundred years of service. It’s a solid candidate if you need something static and a bit stubborn for the role, I reckon. Tell it a joke, it's been a long time since anyone did.

CastleCastle, unclassified · 2.5 mi

Explorer Tom Castle in County Roscommon is hiding from the weather, which has a long grudge against it. Lewis mentioned it in 1837, but nobody can find it now. Get there early and have it all to yourself.

Tully LodgeHouse · 3.8 mi

Explorer Tom Tully Lodge in Tully is a grand old house that definitely thinks it’s better than you are, which is fair enough given its impressive architecture. Rumor has it a goat once ruled this place with an iron hoof, and honestly, looking at those windows, I’d believe it. It's free to admire from the outside.

Site of Dangan CastleCastle, unclassified · 4.0 mi

Explorer Tom Site of Dangan Castle wants its tombstone to say 'He Was A Stronghold And Also A Bit Of A Mess', which is very accurate. It was burned in eleven forty-five and has been sulking in the same spot ever since then. Perfect place to be dramatically windswept.

Pedunculate Oak4.3 mi

Explorer Tom Pedunculate Oak in County Roscommon is haunted by a ghost who is far too lazy to actually haunt it, so it just sits there looking vaguely disappointed while everyone else does the work. It’s like a supernatural slacker that has given up on the whole spooky business before it even started properly. Hum something sad nearby, it adds atmosphere.

Sweet Chestnut4.4 mi

Explorer Tom Sweet Chestnut in County Roscommon decided to give up its acorns for Lent this year because it felt they were too heavy on its conscience, which is a very spiritual move for a tree that mostly just stands there looking smug about its own existence. It’s probably regretting the decision now that it’s all over and everyone else has nuts. Look for the ghost, then pretend you didn't.

Strokestown ParkHeritage attraction · 4.4 mi

Explorer Tom Strokestown Park is hiding a treasure that is definitely just a biscuit tin with a very dramatic backstory attached to it. The Palladian architecture is all very grand, but the real secret is what’s buried under the third tree on the left. Take a mate and argue about what it was for.

Strokestown HouseMuseum · 4.5 mi

Explorer Tom Strokestown House again? Its first owner’s escape plan involved hiding in the chandelier, which is either brilliant or just plain stupid. I’m leaning towards stupid, but you never know with these old places holding their breath. Find a local and ask them the real story, then come back and tell me.
