Edergole Bridge

Single-arched bridge carrying small country road over unnamed mountain stream draining into Lough Eske, built c. 1820, having splayed wing walls to parapets (north and south). Round-headed arch having roughly dressed voussoirs, roughly dressed and squared rubble stone construction to arch barrel. Randomly coursed and squared rubble stone construction to spandrels, parapets and wing walls. Vertically-set rubble stone coping over parapets and wing walls. Tarmacadam deck with grass to verges and centre. Located a short distance to the north of Lough Eske and to the north-east of Donegal Town.

This simple but appealing bridge retains its early character and form, and is a feature of some picturesque merit in the rural landscape to the north of Lough Eske and in the foothills of the Blue Stack Mountains. It is robustly-constructed in good quality squared local rubble stone masonry, and its continued survival and use stands as testament to the quality of its original construction, and of the skill of the masons involved. The slightly battered and splayed wing walls terminating the parapets are a feature found on a number of bridges in Donegal. This bridge probably originally dates to the late-eighteenth or early-nineteenth century, a period that saw a great deal of road and bridge-building in Ireland, particularly by the Grand Juries (the forerunners of the County Councils).
