Ecclesiastical enclosure in Proleek

The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 The site consists of an oval area (max. dims. 129m E-W, 118m N-S) bounded by a stone wall constructed with large boulders. At the S is a sunken laneway which may represent the remains of a fosse. Locally known as 'Cill Mór' and said to have contained rough headstones (CLAJ 1944, 316). It was possibly the site of the outlying church belonging to Mellifont Abbey, according to Tempest (CLAJ 1944, 317). According to the OS Memoranda a cross-inscribed slab was found in the fence at the E side of the enclosure.
