Earthwork in Raheen (coshlea By.)

Earthwork

What is recorded here

Earthwork in Raheen is a levelled ringfort hidden in pasture, visible only as a circular cropmark about thirty metres across. It escaped historic mapping and human memory until gas pipeline aircraft photographed the field in 1984. The land still holds its shape, waiting for rain or drought to draw the circle into view.
In pasture, fulacht fia (LI049-041----) lies 95m to the SW. Not depicted on historic OSi maps. Possible levelled ringfort identified as a circular cropmark on Bórd Gáis Éireann Curraleigh West-Limerick gas pipeline aerial photographs (BGE 1/5000; 2580) taken 03/11/1984. Levelled monument visible as a circular-shaped cropmark (diam. c. 30m) on Digital Globe orthoimage and Google Earth orthoimages. The monument is intersected at W and E by linear cropmarks running N-S which may represent post-1700 field drainage channels. See attached BGE aerial photograph and Google Earth orthoimages.
