Durlston Bay features a prominent headland composed mainly of Portland Limestone, formed during the Late Cretaceous period around 100 to 66 million years ago. The rock was deposited in a shallow tropical sea and is notable for its fossil content and role in the iconic coastal scenery of the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
