Broughty Castle was built in the 14th century by the Earls of Buchan, with significant fortification carried out in the 15th century. It is important as a key coastal stronghold in eastern Scotland, strategically controlling access to Dundee and the Tay estuary, and has witnessed numerous conflicts including the Wars of Scottish Independence.
