Dubber Castle rose behind the present house between 1582 and 1611, built by Sir Christopher Daniel Bellingham before he became the first Lord Mayor of Dublin. The state lost the building before it lost the man: a civil survey recorded ruined walls in the 1650s, and by 1881 only a door-sill lay buried in the low pasture. What remains is a ghost address, a castle reduced to the memory of its own threshold.

According to Adams (1881) the castle at Dubber was erected between 1582 and 1611 by Sir Christopher Daniel Bellingham, first Lord Mayor of Dublin in 1665 (Adams 1881, 492). It was described as a 'small castle' with other 'ruined' walls in the Civil survey (1654-6 see Simington 1945, 199). By 1881 the only remains of the castle was a door-sill which lay NW of the present house (Adams 1881, 492). Located field of low-lying pasture to the rear of Dubber House. No visible surface trace. Sir Christopher Daniel Bellingham, first Lord Mayor of Dublin in 1665, built Dubber Castle between 1582 and 1611. The castle is remembered as a small but historically notable structure associated with an influential early Dublin official.
