Drimoleague Railway Station

Detached eight-bay single-storey railway station, built 1899, now vacant. Recent extensions to rear (north-west) and side (north-east). Pitched overhanging corrugated-iron roof with rendered chimneystack, rooflight, vertical timber gable cladding, cast-iron brackets supporting overhang and cast-iron rainwater goods. Corrugated-iron walling with timber string course. Square-headed openings with timber sills and surrounds, now blocked. Square-headed openings having single and double-leaf timber battened doors with timber surrounds. Red-brick platform to south-east with concrete coping.

This former railway station is a reminder of the network of railway stations and associated railway buildings which existed in West Cork. The railway was of great social and economic importance to Drimoleague and the surrounding area. The structure itself is of particular note due to its corrugated-iron construction. This material became common in Ireland from the 1840s onward and has a particular association with the development of railways. However, corrugated-iron buildings are becoming increasingly rare and their heritage value is often overlooked.
