Donough MacCarthy, 4th Earl of Clancarty

Birthplace

What is recorded here

Donough MacCarthy, 4th Earl of Clancarty, was born in 1668 at Blarney, the only son of Callaghan, 3rd Earl of Clancarty, and Elizabeth Fitzgerald. He inherited vast estates in County Cork and County Kerry at age eight, yet his mother sent him to England for a Protestant education under Bishop John Fell because his father’s Catholic roots made the boy a political risk. Donough later fought for James II at the Siege of Derry, was attainted in 1691, and died in exile near Hamburg in 1734, carrying a Cork birth into foreign loss.
