Denis Horgan

Banteer, County Cork, is the birthplace of Denis Horgan, the shot-put champion who won thirteen British AAA titles and an Olympic silver medal before leaving athletics behind. He moved to America, worked as a police officer, and was stabbed while rescuing a fellow Irishman. After recovering, he returned to Ireland, married, and settled in Crookstown, where the greatest thrower of his age became an ordinary resident again.
