Deer park in Abbeycartron

Associated with a fortified house (LF013-062----). In 1668 the English Crown granted Francis Aungier the 'right to enclose and impark 500 acres, less or more, of any part of his lands belonging to the manor of Longford, for deer, &c., with all the privileges, &c. of a free park and free warren, &c.' (Cal. S.P. Ire. 1666-69, 646). This deer park was located near the town of Longford (LF013 026----) for in 1668 the duke of Ormond wrote a letter 'in Lord Aungier's favour, for creating his town of Longford a corporation and giving him leave to make a park for deer near it' (ibid., 1669-70, 611-12).
