Darnaway Castle, including its Kitchen Range, was originally built by the Mackintoshes of Darnaway, a prominent Scottish clan, with the main castle dating back to at least the 13th century. The site is historically significant as it was once a stronghold of Clan Mackintosh and is associated with the Battle of Culloden in 1746, where the Mackintoshes played a key role in the Jacobite forces.
