Dan O'Herlihy was born in Wexford, County Wexford, on 1 May 1919, before moving to Dublin to study architecture and discover his true calling on stage. He traded drafting tables for Gate Theatre marathons, appearing in some fifty plays until cinema swallowed him whole. From Orson Welles' Macbeth to RoboCop's Old Man, he carried Irish fire into global fiction, dying in Malibu in 2005 after decades of shaping worlds others believed real.
