Manor in County Waterford is where D. P. Moran was born in 1869, the youngest of twenty children in a builder's household. That crowded house gave Ireland a restless theorist who believed national identity required Catholicism, Gaelic games and resistance to English habits. Moran never mastered Irish himself, yet he wrote passionately about its necessity, turning personal limitation into public doctrine.
