Explorer Tom Cors Caron spreads across the Teifi valley north of Tregaron, and its boardwalk lets you cross a living bog without donating your boots to the mud. Three raised peat domes fill this great wetland; I would call them sleeping giants, except a giant with twelve thousand years of damp bedding would wake up grumpy. The bogs grew from plant remains over roughly 12,000 years, and the reserve now covers more than 800 hectares. The River Teifi runs through its floodplain among reedbeds, fen, wet grassland, woodland and pools. Natural Resources Wales manages the reserve and describes its bogs as among Britain's most intact. The accessible Cors Caron Walk crosses the south-east bog to a viewing hide; a separate route follows the former railway towards Ystrad Meurig. From the hide, give the landscape a few quiet minutes. Red kites, curlews and skylarks are among the birds recorded here, while dragonflies and lizards belong to the smaller cast. No creature is obliged to appear on cue: I once tried announcing myself as the Bog Inspector and even the reeds declined to salute. The old railway margin offers another way to see the reserve, and hints at how human travel and peatland recovery share the valley. The main car park is off the B4343 about two miles north of Tregaron. Use the signed paths and boardwalk, as deep peat and water make a poor place for shortcuts; check the manager's visitor page for any temporary trail changes. Bring time rather than a list of guaranteed sightings. The remarkable thing is that this apparently quiet ground has been building itself, slowly and stubbornly, since long before anyone thought to lay a railway beside it.
