Cursing stone in Newhall

Situated on and beside a stone altar (CL041-062004-) on the N shore of Killone Lake, 125m NE of Killone Augustinian nunnery (CL041-062001-). Three water-rolled stones (L c. 0.15m) or ‘cursing stones’ lie spread out on top of the altar and a large fourth one (L c. 0.6m) is at the base. While stones of this type are generally classified as cursing stones there is no known evidence of their use for that purpose in this instance. They may have been used as prayer stones. 'Cursing stones' are known from a variety of ecclesiastical sites and are present in a bullaun stone within an ecclesiastical enclosure in Killian townland(CL026-003007-).
