Culloville Bridge

Single-arch stone railway bridge, built 1849, carrying embanked Dundalk to Enniskillen railway line over road. Now in use as footbridge as part of way-marked walking trail. Round arch having rusticated voussoirs and chamfered impost course. Rock-faced rusticated stone abutments having margined quoins. Brick soffit to arch. Cut-stone walls, chamfered string course to parapet with cut-stone copings. Part of parapet to south-east elevation missing. Splayed buttressing cut and snecked stone walls to embankments.

The simple form of this bridge along with the articulation achieved through stone dressing is typical of several railway bridges on this railway line and displays skilled stone masonry. The rock-faced treatment to the abutments emphasises their strength and structural role. It is a visual reminder of the Great Northern Railway which closed in the mid-twentieth century. The Monaghan Way long-distance footpath follows the track bed over the bridge.
