Crutched Friars marks a thirteenth-century priory where a dispute with citizens caused deaths in 1285. The departing friars are said to have cursed the town, a wound that lasted until Pope Eugenius IV lifted it in 1436. The place still carries that sudden violence and long release, making memory sound like fate rather than history.
