Esker is a wooden hill in the first place. The monastery, the road and the stone are all younger than the shape of the land. That is why the cross still stands there.

Incorporated into the Stations of the Cross along a woodland walk in the grounds of St Patrick's Redemptorist Monastery (GA084-071001-) at Esker, Athenry. This cross-slab is incorporated into the 14th Station. It has a deeply cut V-sectioned border all around it and it bears a ringed cross of three lines with plain straight ended terminals. Probably dates to the early Christian period (7th–10th century), based on its form and context. It may originally have served as a high cross or memorial stone, later repurposed into the Stations of the Cross in the 19th or 20th century.
