Cross-slab in Saggart

Granite slab or pillar-stone with rounded or hogback shape set upright in the NW end of Saggart graveyard (DU021-034003-). It is shaped and bordered and bears a single shaft with a ring-headed cross at each end and mouldings along the edge (dims. L 1.42m, Wth 0.32-0.47m, T 0.25-0.39m). Ó hÉalidhe has suggested a tenth-century date (Ó hÉalidhe 1973, 103, 61; Bradley & King 1987, 2, 294; Swords 2009, 101). Probably dates to the early medieval period, likely 9th to 11th century, and may have functioned as a Christian memorial or waymarker. The ring-headed crosses suggest a liturgical or symbolic Christian association, possibly linked to early monastic or ecclesiastical activity in the area.
