Cross-slab in Inishkeen Island

A cross-slab from the Friars Garden (LE002-023003-) is now in the National Museum of Ireland (Lucas 1972, 197). It is described (Herity et al. 1997, 105) as a ‘trapezoidal sandstone slab (dims 0.8m x 0.6m; T 0.08m) with two nested roughly equal-armed crosses with forked and T-bar terminals and two concentric circles around the crossing.’ The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Leitrim' compiled by Michael J. Moore (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2003). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.

A cross-slab from the Friars Garden, likely medieval in date, possibly associated with early Christian monastic activity on Inishkeen Island. Its carved cross may reflect Christian symbolism or local devotional practice.
