Why it mattered
cross — Kilconnell matters for the exact reasons given in its official assessment, rather than merely because it is an old structure. The source records: Erected for a number of reasons, wayside crosses are found throughout Europe and the Christian world. This one was probably a memorial cross, as the inscription exhorts the passer-by to pray for John Donnellan, whose family erected it. A remarkably early monument, the carving is still crisp. It was damaged in 1844, and subsequently re-erected by Reverend W. Manning, and inscribed to this effect. This explains what the place adds to local life, the street or the surviving built history.
