Cross-inscribed stone in Newtown (kells Lower By., Newtown Ed)

Just east of the Newtown church, a flat stone no taller than a forearm carries a cross with bar-terminals, cut shallow enough to hide beneath moss or forgetfulness. The markings survive because someone chiselled them deliberately, perhaps marking a boundary, a burial, or a prayer for people who no longer speak. The stone remains small and quiet, yet the cross still points upward, waiting for hands to read what the town has stopped repeating.
