Cross-inscribed stone in Aghanagh

In Aghanagh graveyard (SL040-171002-) and to SE of a church (SL040-17101-). Discovered in 1995 during a graveyard clean up (pers. comm. M. B. Timoney). A photograph taken in 1995 by M. B. Timoney shows an upright, but slightly leaning, D-shaped boulder (Wth c. 1m; H c. 1m) on which is carved, in relief, a cross similar in design to the head of a high cross. The cross is a ringed cross with expanded terminals which project beyond the circle. A semicircular boss projects inwards from the inner edge of the ring in each of the four spaces between the arms of the cross. In the centre of the cross is a recessed circle. The cross occupies the entire face of the boulder on which it is carved. (Herity, Kelly and Mattenberger 1997, 118). Likely dating to the early Christian period (5th–10th century AD), the cross-inscribed stone may have served as a gravestone or memorial within the graveyard. Such stones often carried religious or commemorative significance, reflecting Christian symbolism in a local context.
