What is recorded here

Ballybought is a lost cross, not a living column, because O’Conor already found its letters illegible in 1839. It stood near an old church in County Kildare, large enough to be remembered and faded enough to slip away. What it marked has gone quiet, leaving only the shape of a cross behind the field.

According to O’Conor, jointly compiling the OSL in 1839 (Herity 2002, 199 (283)), ‘In a field near the old Church [KD029-022----], stands a large stone cross, which exhibits some letters of an inscription now illegible.
