Church (in Ruins)

In a graveyard (KD029-022001-). In 1615, the church was described as having been repaired (Ronan 1941a, 40), but by 1630 the church and chancel had fallen (Ronan 1941b, 80). According to O’Conor, jointly compiling the OSL in 1839 (Herity 2002, 199 (282)), ‘One gable of an old Church remains here, having a window with a small stone cross placed over it.’ Walshe (1931, 140-1) doesn’t mention the cross, but describes the window; ‘Only the east gable now stands. In the centre of this wall is a narrow Gothic window 46 inches by 12¾ inches [c. 1.16m by c. 0.32m), consisting of two granite pillars surmounted by two carved granite stones to form the arch. The splay is rather pronounced giving a total height of 7 feet 6½ inches [c. 2.3m] and breadth of 5 feet 3 inches [c. 1.6m].’ The remains of a ruined rectangular structure (12.7m E-W; 5.2m N-S) comprise the overgrown, split rubble-limestone, lower courses of the S side wall and W gable wall (H 1m; wall T 0.9m) together with the even lower remains of the N sidewall (H 0.1-0.4m) and the ivy-clad S end of the E gable wall (H 2.2m).
