Cromwellian Burial Ground lies at the limestone foot of Inis Mór, a vanished circle reduced to a thirty-five-metre earthen arc beside a sand pit. It probably dates from the mid-seventeenth century when soldiers occupied Caisleán Aircín, suggesting forgotten men and women slept beneath soil now scraped away. The missing chamber and buried bodies remain invisible, but the surviving bank preserves the shape of a temporary military world that the island later absorbed.

At the foot of a small limestone bluff close to S shore of Cuan Cill Éinne, Inis Mór. Named 'Cromwellian Burial Ground' and indicated on OS 6-inch map as a circular area (D c. 20-25m) with a small roofed rectangular structure in W half of the interior. All that survives today is an arc (L c. 35m) of earthen bank (Wth 1.5m, H 0.25m), part of which has been destroyed by a sand pit. Nothing is visible in the interior. The graveyard probably dates from the mid-17th century when the nearby bastioned fort, Caisleán Aircín, (GA119-005002-), was built and occpupied. Cromwellian Burial Ground, Cill Éinne is a 17th-century burial site associated with the English military presence on Inis Mór during the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland. Its significance lies in its historical connection to the conflict and subsequent colonization of the western seaboard.

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
