Cremation pit in Ballybar Lower

Excavated in advance of construction of the N9/N10 Kilcullen-Waterford Road (Excavation Licence number E2621), one of two cremation pits (see also CW012-159----). A sub-circular shaped pit (L 0.56m; Wth 0.48m; max D 0.80m) containing charcoal, fragments of cattle teeth and a large quantity of burnt bone mostly from the cranium of one individual. A calibrated radiocarbon date of 1511-1325 BC was obtained from the bone. (Hanbridge R. and Hackett L. 2009, 4) Reference: Hanbridge R. and Hackett L.
