Crannoge is a crannog in County Clare, Ireland, an artificial island built among reeds and shallow water. It is the kind of place where people may have stacked timber, stone and soil until dry land appeared above the swamp, then lived there while the lake closed around their feet. The water did not drown the making; it judged whether the making was strong enough to continue.
