Crannog in Maghery

Mullaghglassan Lough is a triangular lake (dims c. 260m NW-SE; c. 130m NE-SW) with the apex at the SE. During 1983 the level of the lake was lowered by c. 1.2-1.4m and the crannog came to light. It was a circular cairn (diam. 14m; H 0.7m), but no structural features were evident. The top surface was eroded and the natural shoal on which it was built was apparent. The crannog has remained visible ever since. A large part of the skeleton of a Giant Irish Deer was recovered from the lake at the same time.
