Crannog in Kilconny is a drowned or hidden artificial island in County Cavan, built by people who refused to leave the water behind. They stacked stone, soil and perhaps wood against the lake’s pull, creating a small dry world where fire could burn and children could play while swans passed beneath. The lake took most of it back, but it never took the act of making a place where none existed.
