Court tomb in Ballymurray

In a shallow basin, in rolling rush-grown pasture. Only part of the rear chamber (L 2.8m) of a SSE-facing court tomb gallery now remains. It is represented by the backstone, now split in two along its length, two sidestones adjoining the W end of the last, and 1.5m forward of these a segmenting jamb. A deep ditch extends E-W 1m forward of the jamb. Court tomb, dating to the Neolithic period (c. 3500–2500 BCE). These tombs are among the earliest megalithic monuments in Ireland and represent significant communal burial and ritual practices of early farming societies.
