Corn Mill

In pasture, on a N-flowing stream, c. 150m S of Ballyhowley Castle, a tower house (MA092-039001-). A mill is listed in the Strafford Inquisition of County Mayo (O'Sullivan, W. 1958, 105): '…the castle and town of Bellaghowly, with 3qrs and 3 cartons of land and a cornmill thereunto adjoining…'. The mill is depicted on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as an E-W rectangular building, named ‘Corn Mill’, which straddles the N-flowing stream. The remains consist of the W gable (6.5m N–S; T 0.65m; H c. 5.5m), with slight returns of the N and S walls, located 2m W of the stream. The walls are constructed of mortared stone. There is a square window just below the apex of the gable, at second story/attic level. The proximity of the gable to the stream indicates that the building did straddle the stream.
