Cormey Bridge

Double-arch stone road bridge, built c.1750, spanning River Lagan, with recent concrete abutments. Punch-dressed stone parapet and rendered coping. Coursed rubble stone spandrels. Slightly deformed semi-circular arches with irregular cut-stone voussoirs, random rubble soffit partially rendered over coursed-squared rubble stone abutments. Dressed stone V-cutwaters to both faces on concrete footings. Rubble stone abutments and wing walls.

A stone road bridge spanning the Meath Cavan boarder of relatively early date, evidenced by the irregular from of its construction, constituting a valuable contribution to the civil engineering heritage of the county. The course of the road skirting an historic demesne is typical of rural infrastructure funded under the landlord-controlled grand jury system in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuies. The composition of the bridge is elegantly balanced and proportioned demonstrating an eighteenth century sensibility, and is finished with simply executed stonework. The bridge is in good condition retaining most of its salient features and contributes strongly to the architectural character of its setting.
