Coolnagloose House

Detached four-bay two-storey country house with dormer attic, extant 1871, on a T-shaped plan with single-bay two-storey gabled projecting end bay (south) or single-bay two-storey gabled advanced bay (north); two-bay (south) or single-bay (north) two-storey side elevations. Vacant, 1901. Occupied, 1911. Sold, 1942. Resold, 1951. Undergoing "restoration", 2007. Set in unkempt landscaped with cut-granite monolithic piers to perimeter having shallow pyramidal capping supporting wrought iron double gates.

A country house erected by Captain Thomas Jones (d. 1871) of the Kilkenny Militia (Calendars of Wills and Administrations 1871, 286) representing an important component of the later nineteenth-century domestic built heritage of north County Wexford with the architectural value of the composition confirmed by such attributes as the deliberate alignment maximising on scenic vistas overlooking gently rolling grounds with a woodland in the near distance; the multi-faceted plan form; the diminishing in scale of the multipartite openings on each floor producing a graduated visual impression with the principal "apartments" or reception rooms defined by polygonal bay windows; and the decorative timber work embellishing the roofline. Having been reasonably well maintained, the elementary form and massing survive intact together with substantial quantities of the original fabric, both to the exterior and to the interior where contemporary joinery; chimneypieces; and plasterwork enrichments, all highlight the artistic potential of the composition: however, an unfinished "restoration" may determine the ongoing architectural heritage status of the country house. Furthermore, adjacent outbuildings (extant 1905) continue to contribute positively to the group and setting values of an estate having subsequent connections with Captain Michael Henry Thunder (1836-80) of the Royal Scots Fusiliers (Calendars of Wills and Administrations 1880, 707); Henry Charles Quin (----) and Elizabeth Quin (----) 'late of Coolnagloose Gorey County Wexford' (Calendars of Wills and Administrations 1890, 656); the Honourable George Frederick William Stopford (1859-1933) of Courtown House (NA 1911); and Jack C.T. Crozier (1900-83) and Eleanor Martha Crozier (1909-2005).
